About Shirley Chisholm
Shirley Chisholm was the first African-American woman to run and be elected to Congress. She was elected on her campaign slogan, "Fighting Shirley Chisholm--Unbought and Unbossed." In 1972, she would become the first African-American to seek the Presidency of the United States.

In Congress and in her personal life, Chisholm spoke out for civil rights, women's rights, the poor and against the Vietnam War. She was a sought-after speaker and co-founder of the National Organization for Women, the Congressional Black Caucus and the National Women's Political Caucus. She remarked that, "Women in this country must become revolutionaries. We must refuse to accept the old, the traditional roles and stereotypes."
